About Me

ME!

I am a Diplowife, Mum to two lovely children and an adventurous being! I also dabble in a lot of interesting past-times and hobbies!

I have a very multicultural background (I am of Sri Lankan Malaysian ethnicity as well as Bengali) and I am honoured to have lived in many countries (5 to be exact!). I was born in the sunny island country of Sri Lanka but moved to the UAE when I was a baby (due to civil unrest and JVP Marxist riots). After moving within the UAE and attending 2 different nurseries and 3 different schools, we finally moved back to Sri Lanka just when I became a teenager. My father worked in Sales and my mother was a loans officer at a reputed bank in the UAE, being one of the first non-white female middle managers at a very male-dominated Muslim-managed bank. She was a lovely example and role model to my sister and I and sadly passed away in April 2020 which still saddens me to this day.

I have an Australian IT degree and I worked at Sri Lanka's leading weekly newspaper as a journalist and magazine editor and prior to that, I worked at two independent newspapers there as well. I covered the end of the Sri Lankan civil war against the LTTE from 2007 to 2009 and even had my own defence column. In 2008, I met my diplomat husband when he was posted to Sri Lanka and then got married in 2012 and moved to London. In 2014, we moved to Peru where I did a lot of volunteer and charity work, I then ended up representing Peru in international cricket when I played for the Peru National Women's team in 2015 (Chile) and 2016 (Brazil) and even won a bronze medal in 2016.

We then moved to Nigeria from 2017 up until when we got evacuated in April 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. My last volunteer job was at an ESL educational program called Building Lives where we taught English at an IDP camp for women abused and raped by Boko Haram violence.

One other thing I did in Nigeria was do a lot of beading with the 'No Wahala' (means No Problem in the Nigerian Hausa language) beading group in Abuja where we took turns hosting beading sessions and creating beautiful beaded art creations. I made lots of creations, like this one! And it was fab - we had the sisterhood and I even managed to co-administrate the group with my partner MC.

I also started a baking and catering business called Cakes and Cutlets when I was in Nigeria and in 2018 November, I even baked for HRH the Prince of Wales.

I lived in Nigeria up until 2020 when we were evacuated and had to return back to the UK. Now that our posting is almost over, we have now settled in the lovely city of Brighton (yes, the home of most of the gay people in the UK) and we love it. People have been friendly, warm and kind.

I am proud to live my life and have a lot more to give!
